How much energy are you willing to Invest to have a good BI and Marketing system?

Acquire data from a specialist, use APIs, and only store the information where you have a method of updating it.
The best-known method for having your own database is to host your data, but another solution is to export data from a provider when you need it.

Acquire data from a specialist in your business, to have online access and regular updates.
If you need to have the data onboard and don't want to use APIs, ask your provider to download an extract of your target at the frequency of your choice, including information about changes. You can then run your own internal process of updates and enrichment, or associate the companies' profile with the last update from your supplier web. This can be done using an HTML link provided by your supplier. Alternatively, it's easier to host your data and export it from a provider when you need it.

To store too much information, without sourcing the origin of the information.
It's essential to source the origin of the information and avoid storing too much information. Sedimentation in databases is a significant issue. Sourcing information will help you update it and avoid this problem. Not sourcing the information puts your sales team at high risk of losing confidence in your database.

To buy a database without considering the updating process.
It's a golden rule never to upload data without considering the updating process.

To have multiple databases covering the same target.
If you have multiple databases covering the same target, you will multiply the problems.

To hope that one's clients will update the database themselves.
You can't hope that your clients will update the database themselves. On average, a client has several suppliers (around 20), and each of them expects the client to do the job. Unless you represent a significant part of their business, they will never do this.

To hope that your sales team updates the database.
You can't hope that your sales team will update the database. The role of a salesperson is to sell. If you eat up their bandwidth with tasks that don't bring immediate value, they will not do it correctly. Don't think of paying or incentivizing them to do it; they will not do it correctly or may do it incorrectly. If they do it correctly, consider changing their position.
