Belgium
ICT Market Tendencies
The Belgian market appears to be divided in two main areas: the French speaking region and the Flemish one. The two business communities are completed with a third German speaking one, which is marginal. The presence of European institutions in the capital region has positively influenced the economy and created new business opportunities
The Belgian ICT market appears to be driven mainly by SMBs. The leading segments in the ICT Belgian industry are financial services, the public sector, distribution, transports, manufacturing and construction.
The distribution network is mature, although dominated in number by small and rather specialized companies. The retail business is well developed in the ICT sector and e-commerce is in full expansion. Despite the small size of the country, the cultural and linguistic mixture makes its mark on ICT business and distribution
Belgian distributors are smaller in size, work under the proximity law and dispose of limited budgets.
The software market is also concentrated products destined for SMBs. Clients are mainly interested in applications, web content management solutions, networking software and network security products, development tools and CRM/ERP applications.
In the services sector, demand is focused on network management, application hosting, security services and all types of e-commerce related services. The top 40 system integrators control more than a quarter of the entire IT market. Likewise, there is high demand for security devices, electronic methods of payment, and Internet services, as well as for telecom equipment and high-tech services for mobile products.
As for Luxembourg, the very small-sized country totals a few hundred ICT companies. As is the case in Belgium, Luxembourg’s economic activity is strongly oriented towards banking and finance, and ICT activity is developed accordingly. Some Belgian and German distributors cross-manage their businesses in the Benelux area.
